Powering a Cleaner Future: Lucro’s Commitment to Responsible Energy Use

Our journey began with a simple yet powerful promise: to close the loop on plastic waste and build a circular economy that gives new life to old materials. Over the years, this promise has grown into a broader commitment—one that includes not just reducing plastic waste, but rethinking the way we use resources across our entire operation. Recycling plastic waste and manufacturing high-quality packaging from it is an inherently energy-intensive process. From sorting and washing contaminated waste to melting, extruding, and converting it into usable packaging materials, each step consumes significant power. That’s why it’s crucial for us to ensure that the energy driving this transformation is used responsibly, efficiently, and eventually sourced from renewable sources.

According to the United Nations Environment Program, buildings and their construction together account for 36% of global energy use and 39% of energy-related carbon emissions each year. By transforming the way we power our facilities, we’re not just reducing emissions—we're powering a future where sustainability is embedded into every layer of our business.

A Disciplined and Purpose-Driven Approach

We’re committed to focusing our efforts where we believe we can make the greatest long-term impact. That means prioritizing energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions alongside our mission to upcycle plastic waste. It also means improving how we manage our operations—from waste and water to energy, diversity, and employee well-being—across every one of our locations.

Since we began our recycling journey in 2014, we’ve worked with intention to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For every tonne of plastic we recycle and divert from landfill or incineration, we prevent approximately:

  • 1.37 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions
  • 35,003 megajoules of energy usage
  • 12 cubic meters of water from being consumed

From machinery optimization to energy-saving systems in our facilities, we’re constantly finding ways to do more with less—less energy, less waste, less impact. We're also training our teams to be conscious of energy use in their day-to-day activities, turning individual actions into collective change.

At the heart of our ESG efforts is a deep sense of responsibility—to our planet, to our people, and to future generations. Whether it’s minimizing emissions, conserving water, supporting our workforce, or rethinking energy, we’re driven by our vision of progress, one that doesn’t come at the planet’s expense.

Our Energy Vision for 2030

Energy reform is central to climate action. That’s why our 2030 vision includes a bold and measurable goal: To reduce our Scope 2 emissions by 30% through greater dependence on renewable energy. As a part of this plan, we’re working to install solar power systems that will meet nearly 30% of our total energy needs.
